Diaper Cakes

Question: I want to make diaper cakes to sell. need advice on pricing?

I want to make some diaper cakes to sell but i need some advice on how t price them. i dont want to make them too cheap where i dont make a profit but i dont want them to be too expensive. do you think it would be beter to do simple plainer cakes and ask less or make more fancy ones and ask more since they look lots nicer but didnt cost a whole lot more i threw a few together last night just using stuff i had laying around my house from my new baby. some pictures will be below. what do you think the blue one has 29 diapers that are rolled up and the others have 52 diapers that are stacked so they lay flat and fit more. what do you prefer. i think i like the way the rolled look better but there are less diapers so i couldnt sell for as much http:/ / viewmorepics.myspace.com/ index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage &friendID=92534431 &albumID=2536701 &imageID=42703149 http:/ / viewmorepics.myspace.com/ index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage &friendID=92534431 &albumID=2536701 &imageID=42703155 http:/ / viewmorepics.myspace.com/ index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage &friendID=92534431 &albumID=2536701 &imageID=42703162 honestly would you buy any of these and how much would you pay. keep in mind the pictures above were just thrown together and i would take much care in ribbons and items placed i was just getting an idea using what things i had. and they would be placed on boards or platters i found this one online that i very pretty and doesnt have alot on it but is very nice and they are selling it for 150 and is surly didnt cost much for the bear and couple travel items ribbon http:/ / www.lilbabycakes.com/ my- first- teddy- diaper- cake- girl.html well i didnt go out and buy anything when making these so its hard to say i took the diapers from the diaper cake i was given and used things i had aroudn the house that i bought inthe past or were given. there were about 30 diapers in the blue one a roll of ribbon a pack of plastic forks and spoons that cost a dollar at walmart. a couple cheap pacifiers a pair of socks travel baby lotion travel hand sanatizer all those are farely cheap and buying a pack of socks and only putting one or two pair per cake would leave extra for other cakes. same as wash cloths etc

How much did it cost you to make them? Go with that price then add a couple dollars or double it so you make a decent profit.

How much did you spend on the product, and what kind of profit would you like to make off one cake?

To be honest, and not to hurt your feelings or anything, i wouldn't buy any of those; they just don't look professional like the one with the pink teddies you posted...although i use swaddlers and she prob does have quite a bit of money in the diapers....i would guess20/ 25 dollars just for the diapers and that's if u buy them by the case which she prob does...and then she's got a lot of time in it as well as brand name everything, which isn't cheap either....i just think u need to practice your technique a little more before trying to sell them, and i am not talking about the things u had on, bc i know u used things you had , but the actual cake itself....hth
